Notes from Joy:

"Build it and they will come" was the theme in the movie Field Of Dreams. Many people use this theme in marketing their websites. I know I am included. I have a website JewelryWithJoy.com and have had trouble getting traffic to this site. In my last newsletter I talked about Tom Peter's belief that the internet is the future. It is important for us to learn how to drive traffic to our respective websites. One way of marketing on the internet is by sending emails. I asked David Smith of SuddenlyInSite.com to give us pointers on doing just this. I hope you learn just as much as I have.

Also, read on for some basic tips for creating your style. In the coming issues I will be exploring these ideas in more detail. Next month I will write about color.

If you have any nuggets you would like to share, questions or comments please email me at joy@designwithjoy.com or call me at (503) 655-2682. Enjoy.

Your Style 101
Let Your Image Shine Before People Meet You!

Its fall!! All the new fall fashions are in the stores. How do you determine which clothing styles look best on your body?

To help you find the clothes that define and enhance your look, I have created a 10 point list of ideas to keep in mind when shopping for clothes and putting your look together.

• Coloring - If your coloring is warm (gold undertones) choose warm colors; however if your coloring is cool (blue undertones) choose cool colors.

• Curved Face - If the shape of your face is oval or curved, then the inside lines of the garment and accessories should also be curved.

• Angular Face
- If the shape of your face is angular, then the inside lines of the garment and accessories should also be angular.

• Defined Waist - If you have a definite waist, the line of the garment should also have a defined waist.

• No Waist - If you do not have a definite waist or boyish figure, the line of the garment should be straight waisted.

• Tight Clothing - If you see horizontal pulls or creases, the clothing is too tight fitting.

• Large Clothing - If you see vertical folds or creases, the fit of the garment is too large.

• Horizontal Lines - stop the eye's vertical movement. They can cut you in half and make areas of your figure you look bigger by emphasizing that spot.

• Vertical Lines - elongate and vertically divide. A vertical line from top to bottom can make you appear taller.

• Your Fit - If you cannot find clothing that fits all over, have the garments altered or have clothing tailored just for you.

If you would like a consultation to help you determine what type of clothes look best on you, call 503-655-2682 or email

You're an image-conscious person or you wouldn't be reading Joy's newsletter. You have come to Design With Joy because you want your image to uniquely fit your business and your personality, and to support your goals.

Where, in addition to your clothing, do you need that "perfect fit" to convey the right image? More and more, people's first contact is an electronic contact over the internet. People are likely to read your email before they ever see you in person.

What kind of image are your email messages conveying?
Here are 7 guidelines for conveying an electronic image that will "fit" your business and professional goals:

1. Stand out instantly with excellent grammar, spelling, and complete sentences!

2. Respond rapidly-use auto-responders where necessary.

3. Be brief and get to the main point immediately-in your first sentence.

4. Employ strong headlines so the reader with 100 emails can skim yours and quickly get the point. They'll thank you!

5. Thank liberally.

6. Give your reader one targeted compliment.

7. Turn your signature stamp into a brief, meaningful tag line that summarizes your business philosophy.

Follow these seven guidelines and your electronic image will always shine, and by the time your reader sees you in your outfit designed by Joy, you will have already won their heart!

David Smith is project manager for the State of Oregon's first on-line employment application, www.odotjobs.com , and CEO of www.SuddenlyInSite.com helping business professionals quickly grow a large contact/client list through the Top 10 Internet Marketing Strategies (a free e-series).
