Notes from Joy:
June 2006
Welcome to my first monthly newsletter Ideas for Working and Living in Style. As women we continuously search for ways to make our lives easier and more satisfying. In my work as a clothing designer and fashion consultant, I meet wonderful many women from all walks of life. All have nuggets of gold to share. My vision for this newsletter is to gather these nuggets and share them with you by offering columns, tips, resources and information about upcoming events, all with the goal of opening more doors to more women.

Each month, this newsletter will include at least two articles. The first is my column, which will explore the topics of clothes and image and success. This month I focus on how to create a professional wardrobe, one that you will not only love wearing, but even more important, a wardrobe that will make it easier to open doors to new opportunities. My ideas (my nuggets) come from a book Casual Power, by Sherry Maysanave. She states that a “professional image opens doors and makes you more money.”

The second column in this edition is Overcoming Underearnings, by Nancy Grant. In the months to come, we will explore a variety of subjects of interest, including women as leaders, personal finance, exercise and wellness, insurance, investing, building your business, sales and lots more.

I hope the nuggets of gold in this issue and the ones to come will open doors to new opportunities. If you have any nuggets you would like to share, questions or comments please email me at joy@designwithjoy.com. Enjoy.
Is What You Wear to Work Everyday Important?
What Do Six-Figure Women Know That You Don’t?
Yes! 55% of communications is physical and visual and only 7 % is words used. In her book Looking Terrific, Emily Chao states, “Clothing language is an important visual code that projects our talents, our needs, our personalities, and our destination.”

What do you need to think about when picking clothes to work in?

Three things to consider:
• Fit – Clothes must fit all your body, emphasize your assets, skim over your problem area(s), and they must be in proportion to your body.
• Personality – Clothes must complement your personality: simple lines vs. design detail; neutral colors vs. bright colors; classic vs. more cutting edge.
• Audience – Clothes must compliment your type of work, clients, co-workers, and bosses.

The number of women who earn six-figures is growing faster than the number of men. What’s interesting is women who are six-figure earners come from all educational and socio-economic backgrounds. They are investment bankers, artists, actors, teachers, and writers.

If you earn less than your capacity, desire, or potential, you are an underearner! If you’re ready to earn more, then you need to attend the highly interactive Overcoming Underearning™workshop on July 21 & 22. This powerful workshop was designed by best-selling author, Barbara Stanny, the leading authority on women and money, and is facilitated by Nancy Grant and Stacey Lane, certified and experienced business and career coaches.

This workshop brings women together to get on track and overcome underearning. It’s a day and a half of activities, hands-on exercises, and compelling information. You’ll learn the ten traits of underearners and get some powerful tools to use to transform yourself into a high earner. It’s your opportunity to break through underearning so you can finally live the potential you know is inside of you! Created by a woman, for women, it’s an intensive workshop for anyone who’s ready for more – whether it’s asking for more money, pursuing a career, or getting more business.
