EVEolution: The Eight Truths of Marketing to Women
by Faith Popcorn, Lys Marigold

Notes from Joy:
July 2006

Women are big business. Marketing to women is big business too. I 've been reading up on the subject.

In Re-imagine! Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age, author Tom Peters describes marketing to women as one of the biggest markets. Did you know that women:

...• Make 83% of all purchases
...• Buy 91% of new homes
...• Bus 60% of cars (also significantly influence another 30%)

Also American women “write 80% of all checks, pay 61% of all bills, and own 53% of all stock.”

Author, Faith Popcorn has some interesting thoughts on this subject too. In her book Clicking, she writes that, “Men and women don’t communicate the same way, don’t buy for the same reason…” So why are we being marketed to in the same old way.

In EVEolution Understanding Women – Eight Essential Truths That Work in Your Business and Your Life, Popcorn states “women don’t buy brands. They join them.” I think this book is required reading for anyone who wants to build their business by having women “join your brand.”

We women are an important force in the future of this country both economically and politically. So, to encourage you to focus your attention on an important market, this month's eNews is meant to inspire us all:

Women in business, let’s take the bull by the horns and learn to market to ourselves.

How To Dress Casual AND Keep Your Power

Photomax™ –
Your New Best Friend!

In our casual world I think women are losing their power by wearing the wrong type of casual wear.

The following tips, from In Casual Power, by Sherry Maysonave puts casual wear into six categories

• Active casual are clothes you would wear to the gym, running, biking, or playing tennis.

• Rugged casual are clothes you would wear in outdoorsy activities like hunting, fishing backpacking, rock climbing.

• Sporty casual are what you would wear when running errands and generally hanging out.

These categories are not appropriate to wear to work because they take away your power and authority.

• Smart casual is worn when going to an informal dinner with friends. This category includes slacks, crisp jeans or skirt with a blouse or turtleneck, belt, jacket or coordinating sweater and jewelry, shoes and hosiery to complement your overall outfit. If you wear jeans you need to wear a jacket or sweater to upgrade the total look.

• Dressy casual is worn when e.g., going to an opening of a new art exhibit. This type of clothing includes a pant suit, a dress or coordinating separates. The important factor “well-coordinated and accessorized” outfit. No jeans are worn in this category.

• Business casual clothes are well tailored garments from smart and dressy casual.
